Driving Long Distances in Australia

One of the most important elements of planning your motorhome holiday is to allow enough time to travel the long distances we have here in Australia. We have provided the following distance chart below which outlines the kilometres between major cities and towns. We recommend that you allow approximately 200-250 kilometres driving per day. This way if you take a day off driving (as you may be too busy doing many of the wonderful things on offer in Australia) you can easily catch up the distance the following day.

Driving at night

We recommend that you do not drive your motorhome or campervan at night outside of town centres or major cities. Wildlife, especially kangaroos, can be very dangerous on our roads particularly at sunrise and sunset. Sunrise and sunset is when animals are most active because they are looking for food. The most common animals that you could encounter on the Australian roads are: kangaroos, wallabies, cattle, emus, camels, wombats, echidnas, eagles and cockatoos.

Australia law requires all passengers and the driver to wear their seat belts.

Baby seats and child boosters

It is required by Australian law that all children are properly restrained.

Young children who weigh 9kgs to 18kgs (approximately 6 months to 5 years) must be seated in a baby seat (or child seat) which is anchored to the chassis of the vehicle. All of the Around Australia Motorhomes vehicles are fitted with child restraint points. Our 5 Berth Traveller and 6 Berth Grand Tourer have 2 x restraint points, all other vehicles have 1 x restraint point only.

It is recommended that older children who weigh up to 26kgs (approximately 6 years) are seated in a child booster seat. This booster seat gives the child extra height allowing them to fit more safely into a lap/sash seat belt. Both baby seats and child booster seats must be seated in a forward facing position.

Australian climate

As Australia is a large country our climate can vary greatly. We have put together the following table to outline the minimum and maximum temperatures in each city.

Our seasons are as follows:

• Summer: December, January, February
• Autumn: March, April, May
• Winter: June, July, August
• Spring: September, October, November

An important consideration is that the Northern and outback regions of Australia can be extremely hot and humid around our Summer months. Far North locations experience a Summer wet season that may cause road closures in some areas. The most comfortable time of the year to visit areas such as Cairns, Alice Springs, Broome and Darwin is from April to September.

It is always best not to embark on walks or strenuous activities during the full heat of the day and to take a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water along with you
